He was predeceased by: his parents, James Elmer Smallwood and Effie Carlene Reynolds Smallwood; his daughter Vickie Lynn Tart; and his siblings, J. C. Smallwood, Opal Adams, Ola Ray Flint and Nancy Jane Robinson.

He is survived by: his daughters, Gaye Stokes (Paul), Kay McDaniel (Robert), Gayle Dolan and Judy Whitam (Cliff); his grandchildren, Michelle Tart, Michael Tart, Joshua Whitam, Michael Ryan Whitam, Montana McDaniel, Justin McDaniel, Dylan Dement, Austin Dement and Derek Dolan; his great grandchildren, Evan Tart, Luke Tart, Mills McDaniel, Harrison Whitam and David Whitam; his brother Paul Smallwood; and his son-in-law Mike Tart.
