He was predeceased by: his wife Jenny Clay; his daughter Pam Lawson; his granddaughter Grace Diane Bartlett; his parents, Shorty Clay and Dephia Clay; and his brother Willie O'Neal Clay.

He is survived by: his children, Tony Clay and Cheryl Welch (George); and his sister Judy Harrison (Roman).
