He was predeceased by: his parents, Nora Mae Stewart Smith and Waymon A. Smith; and his sister Barbara Maples. He is survived by: his wife Debbie Shubert Smith; his children, James W. Smith (Alexandria), Dana Ware and Sunny Renae Smith; his sister Mary Gates (Johnny); his brother-in-law Fred Maples; and his grandchildren, Briar, Ivy, Willow Johnson, Lea Todd Ware and Daniel "D. J." Melton.
