He was predeceased by: his parents, Jim Thelen and Jo Thelen; and his brother Tom. He is survived by: his children, Mac Thelen (Nora), Chad Thelen, Tyler Thelen (Emily), Michael Thelen, Kyle Thelen (Cori), Maggie Ziolkowski (Stefan), Terese Murray (Bret) and Brooke Crennen (Tyler). He is also survived by 15 grandchildren; his nine siblings and 81 nieces and nephews.
