He was predeceased by: his parents, Donald Lyon and Martha Lyon; and his brother David Lyon. He is survived by: his sister Evelyn Brownlee; his sibling's children, Erin Brownlee Dell (Kyle), Anne Brownlee, Robin Lyon and Jay Lyon; his great-niece Phoebe Dell; his pet Whisper; Samuel Dell.

Richard was the president of the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness Foundation and served on the governance committee of the Gallatin Community Collaborative.
