She was predeceased by: her parents, Goldie Sr. Byrd and Isoline Byrd; her siblings, Goldie Jr., Magaline and Deloris Byrd; and her great grandchildren, Cortney Rashawn Yarborough and Anderson Joseph Cooper.

She is survived by: her husband Arthur Lee Alston; her children, Matilda Howard Cooper (Corey) of Pittsboro, NC, Debbie Howard of Raleigh, NC and Rengate "Rod" Alston (Sophia) of Pittsboro, NC; her grandchild Sequenta Blackman of Durham, NC; her children, Jared Cooper of Atlanta, GA, Leel "Alex" Mangum of Raleigh, NC, Princess Alston of Carrboro, NC, Ebony Alston of Burlington, NC and Brittany Sanders of Pittsfield, MA; her great grandchildren, Aria Alexander and Zuri Johnson of Durham, NC; her siblings, James H. Byrd of Apex, NC and Carolyn B. Peebles of Garner, NC; her friend Mary P. Alston of Pittsboro, NC; her children, Deacon Terence Burney Sr. and Deaconess Laura Burney; and her niece Katrina Byrd. She is also survived by nieces and nephews, cousins, and dear friends.

Viewing was held on Saturday, August 22nd 2026 from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM at the Knotts Funeral Home (50 N Masonic St, Pittsboro, NC 27312). Visitation was held on Sunday, August 23rd 2026 from 1:30 PM to 2:00 PM at the Apex First Baptist Church (419 S Salem St, Apex, NC 27502). A celebration of life was held on Sunday, August 23rd 2026 at 2:00 PM at the same location. During the COVID-19 pandemic that began March 2020, Peggy played a vital role in AFBC's partnership with the Western Regional Food Security Action Group, helping to prepare, serve, and deliver more than 30, 000 hot meals to families and individuals in need throughout the Wake County and surrounding communities.
