He was predeceased by: his parents, Harry Hager Staples and Mary Nelson Burruss Staples; his son Richard Wade Staples; and his siblings, Harry Todd Staples and Judith Staples Haynes.
He is survived by: his daughter Kristen Bell (Staples); his child-in-law Rion Bell of Wake Forest; his grandchildren, Evangeline Bell and Greyson Bell; his close friend Barbara McFatter of Raleigh; and the mother of his child Carol "Gamma" Fleming of Wake Forest.
