He was predeceased by: his parents, Oris Mathis and Ethel Chastain Mathis; his wife Joan "Betty" Mathis; and his siblings, Jerry Mathis and Inez Mathis Walden.
He is survived by: his sister Katie Mathis Yon; his children, Ed Mathis (Sheryl), Charles Mathis, Kevin Mathis (April) and Tammy Hawkins (Matney); his grandchildren, Holly Mathis Burchfield (Jeff), Will Mathis, Kindel Mathis Jones (Stephen), Athena Davalos (Erik), Samuel Mathis (Dina), Rachel Mathis, Marcus Mathis and Wyatt Hawkins; and his great grandchildren, Caden, Ivy, Jesse, Dakotah, Sammy, Gianna, Sanora, Ezra and Corrie.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, October 11th 2025 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the Groce Funeral Home (72 Long Shoals Rd, Arden, NC 28704). A funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 11th 2025 at 12:00 PM at the same location.
