She was predeceased by: her parents, Eden V. Buchanan and Martha McKinney Buchanan; her husband James David Matthews, Jr.; her daughter Patricia Lynne Matthews; and her siblings, Rev. Ralph L. Buchanan, Albert Buchanan, Richard Buchanan, Sanford Buchanan, Mabel Freeman, Alma Campbell, Amanda Jones, Mary Buchanan and Carrie Higgins.
She is survived by: her sons, James David Matthews III (Judy) of Waynesville, NC and Eden Lee Matthews of Asheville; and her sister Lucy Buchanan Smith. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation was held on Monday, August 31st 2026 from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM at the Beverly Hills Baptist Church (777 Tunnel Rd, Asheville, NC 28805). A funeral service was held on Monday, August 31st 2026 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at the same location. A burial was held on Monday, August 31st 2026 at 2:30 PM at the Lewis Memorial Park (415 Beaverdam Rd, Asheville, NC 28804).
