He was predeceased by: his parents, Jack Smith Echols and Sue Duncan Echols; his wife Anne Culbertson Ramsey; his son Smith Echols, Jr.; and his sisters, Freda and Jean.

He is survived by: his children, Beth Echols Keoleian (Greg) and Daniel Echols; and his grandchildren, Sarah Beth, Christian, Carter and Kai. He is also survived by five nieces, one nephew, and three grand-nieces.
