He is survived by: his friend John Young; his son James Walter Thompson, Jr. (Jimmy); his grandson Deandre Dowell; his stepchildren, Delreatha Jane Sigmon (Jane), Tammy James and Victor James; and his sisters, Betty Brown, Elaine Jones and Linda Stroud (Robert). He is also survived by other relatives and friends.
