He was predeceased by: his parents, Dr. Edwin T. Arnold Jr. and Jean Darden Arnold; and his granddaughter Caroline Shade Arnold-Jolley. He is survived by: his wife Ellen Lester Arnold; his children, Matthew E. Arnold (Leigh Jolley) and Elizabeth Arnold Hull (Andy Hull); his granddaughter Ashleigh Arnold; and his siblings, Ellen Davis, Richard Arnold and Frank Arnold (Anna). He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
