He was predeceased by: his father Wilbur Gillis; his wife Grace Marie Patterson Gillis; his sons, Paul Gillis (Frances) and Cecil Pat Stewart, Jr.; his siblings, Bill Gillis, Junior Gillis and Jessie Patterson; Roberta Paye.

He is survived by: his daughter Renee Gillis Hunter (Jeffrey) of Sanford; his grandchildren, Morgan and Megan Hunter; his brother Gary Gene Gillis of Chapel Hill; and his caregivers, Brenda and Edna. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
