She was predeceased by : her parents, George Blackburn and Mary Mills Blackburn. She is survived by : her husband Al Highsmith; her daughter Ali; her son-in-law John-Mark Fussell; her grandchildren, Ariel Fussell, Cannon Fussell and Al's; her brother Joey Blackburn; and her friend Janet. She is also survived by cousins; many extended family.

In lieu of flowers the Highsmith family request that donations be made to Zimmer Cancer Institute, NHRMC Foundation, 2001 S. 17th Street, Wilmington, NC 28401.

“Janet was a very dear friend to me and so many others. She was caring and dependable. Janet surely loved Al, Ali, Ariel and Cannon. She is irreplaceable and will live forever in the memories of those of us who knew her. I cannot believe that she is no longer with us, However, our loss is Heaven’s gain. For those of us who know and love the Lord, we will Janet again.”
