He was predeceased by: his parents, Edsel Roy Hess and Harriette Elizabeth Bowman Hess; and his siblings, Bonnie Jean Van Pelt, Craig, Terry, Ronnie and Neil Hess.

He is survived by: his pets, Hank, Toby and Riley; his wife Connie Hess; his son David Hess of Greensboro; and his sister Beatrice Long (Jim) of Berwick, Pennsylvania. He is also survived by his family, friends.
