He was predeceased by: his parents, William Thompson and Bessie Rice Thompson; his wife Marie Thompson; and his siblings, Tyson Thompson, Annie Ruth Thompson Dodson, Dace Barton and Delbert Barton.

He is survived by: his son G. W. Thompson (Kathie); his granddaughter Krista Thompson Dugger (Leonard); his great grandchildren, Isaiah and Jayden Dugger; his foster son Donald Cowan (Vickie); his granddaughters, Kristina Ferguson (John) and Amanda Kniskern; his great grandchildren, Kristopher, Sarah Ferguson, Jenieve Kniskern and Jaiden Barclift; his niece Brenda Saul; and his nephews, Melvin and Billy Dodson.
