He was predeceased by: his parents, James Thomas "Tommy" and Lena Bryant Stainback; his wife Helen Marie Shanklin Stainback; and his brother James "Jimmy" Stainback. He is survived by: his children, Mark Thomas Stainback of Burlington and Julie Stainback Cates (Gene) of Graham; his grandchildren, Melody Cates Soderlund (Nolan) of Mebane, Zachary Thomas Cates of Hickory, Grant Thomas Stainback of Graham and Phillip Edward Cates (Ashley) of Graham; and his great grandchildren, Cameron Edwards, Terri Cates, Phillip Cates, Jr. and Josslyn Cates.
