He was predeceased by: his parents, Marmon "Joe" McKinney and Imogene Allen McKinney of Little Switzerland; his siblings, Cynthia Frye (Billy) and Harold David McKinney; and his nephew Billy Frye, Jr..

He is survived by: his wife Wanda Choate McKinney; his son Sheldon McKinney (Cecily) of Burnsville; his grandchildren, Tara, Allie, Harper and Walker Lee McKinney; his sister Sheila Phillips; and his nieces, Amy Ogle (Kenney) and Megan Phillips (Jamie). He is also survived by several sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, and other extended family.
