He was predeceased by: his parents, Albert Gaither Powell and LulerBell Neal Powell; his brothers, Robert and James Powell; his grandsons, Joshua and Jordan Powell; and his grandparents, Wesley, Fannie Neal, John and Jo Powell.

He is survived by: his wife Mary Jolly Powell; his daughters, Valerie Powell, Stephanie Harper (Paul) and Melissa Montgomery (Gregory); his siblings, Patricia Setzer and Albert Powell; his grandchildren, Brandon, Me'Kayla, Zachary (Simone), Joseph, Elijah, Serenity and Gregory, Jr.; and his great grandchildren, Ava and Ari.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, October 12th 2025 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at the Catawba Funeral Home (3060 US Hwy 70 SE, Hickory, NC 28602). A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, October 12th 2025 at 1:00 PM at the same location.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Carolina Caring in Sgt. J.P.'s name.
