In the soft embrace of remembrance, we recall the profound impact Derrell had on those he encountered along his journey. Though Derrell may have slipped beyond the veil of mortality, his essence lingers like a faint fragrance in the air, a lingering reminder of the beauty and complexity of the human experience.
He was predeceased by: his parents, Pinkney Purvis Hammonds and Lillian Rose Jones; and his sister Clementine Hammonds. He is survived by: his wife Dulah Lee Tompkins Hammonds; his children, Candace Hammonds Conway (Steven) of Wilmington and Derrell Purvis Hammonds, Jr. (Kimberly) of Chadbourn; and his grandchildren, Gage Landon Hammonds and Dawson Reid Hammonds.
A funeral service was held on Monday, September 22nd 2025 from 2:00 PM to 2:45 PM and at 3:00 PM at the Worthington Funeral Home Chapel (405 E Strawberry Blvd, Chadbourn, NC 28431).
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or to Chadbourn Fire & Rescue.
