He was predeceased by: his wife Mary Ramsden Smith; and his parents, Thomas Smith and Dorothy Smith. He is survived by: his children, Caroline Smith of Albuquerque and Simon Smith of Chapel Hill; and his sisters, Betty Haggerty and Julia Grahame.
In 1960, Walter was awarded Cambridge University's prestigious Adams Prize for his submission "Contributions to Renewal Theory".
