He is survived by: his wife Dr. Jane Boyd Thomas; his daughter Katherine Thomas Sipe (Keller); his granddaughter Sutton of Charlotte, NC; his son Robert Vance Estep-Thomas (Zachary) of Chicago, IL; his mother Martha Jane Thomas; his siblings, Greg Thomas and Meredith Thomas Tidwell (Mike Tidwell); and his nephews, Jack of Charlotte and Benjamin Tidwell of Charlotte.

During the pandemic, he turned his back porch into a classroom, teaching neighborhood children civics lessons — a small but telling example of the kind of man he was.
