He was predeceased by: his parents, Joe Bates and Marie Ledbetter; and his siblings, Marion Bates, Barbara Woods, Joanne Bates and Gary Wayne Bates.
He is survived by: his wife Ruth R. Bates; and his children, Richard Gaines of Charlotte, David Bates, Jr. of Charlotte, Isaiah Bates of Charlotte, Okeem Bates Latecca, Jamar William of Columbia, Beulah Jackson of Columbia, Katara Mintz of Charlotte, NC and Kayla Thomas (Warren) of Saint Matthews. He is also survived by sixteen grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews.
Visitation was held on Sunday, May 25th 2025 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at the Grier Funeral Service - Memorial Chapel (115 John McCarroll Ave, Charlotte, NC 28216). A funeral service was held on Sunday, May 25th 2025 at 1:00 PM at the same location.
