He was predeceased by: his wife Sue Southerland; his parents, Forbis Southerland and Inda Southerland; and his siblings, Patsy and James "Pete" Southerland.

He is survived by: his sons, Ronnie Southerland and Ricky Southerland (Katherine Southerland); his grandchildren, Michael Bazik (Anne Marie), Vincent Southerland (Jena), Jason Southerland and Madison Southerland; his sister Barbara; and his sister-in-law Ruth Southerland. He is also survived by nieces, nephews.

Donations can be made in Donnie's honor to the Children's Hospital at Duke.
