He was predeceased by: his parents, Oscar Penegar and Ethel Lawing Penegar of Charlotte, NC; his siblings, Oscar, Jr., Marilyn Penegar Doster and Richard M. Penegar of North Carolina; and his daughter Sarah Elizabeth Penegar.
He is survived by: his wife Anne Bankhead Lane; his son David Willard Penegar (Robin Ferguson) of Knoxville, TN.; his stepson Hall McGee (Kerry Robinson); his granddaughters, Natalie and Chloe of Pittsburgh, PA; his sister-in-law Lucy Penegar; and his adopted Sarah W. Penegar.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, November 21st 2026 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the Christ Church (900 Broadway, Nashville, TN 37203). A funeral service will be held on Saturday, November 21st 2026 at 12:00 PM at the same location.
In lieu of flowers, suggested memorials include: Vanderbilt University Medical Center Clinics; the Tennessee Justice Center, Nashville; Christ Church Cathedral Community Outreach Ministries; the Education Fund, First United Methodist Church, Gastonia, North Carolina.
