He was predeceased by: his parents, W. Clyde Abernethy and Billie Cauble Abernethy; his brother Billy Abernethy; and his son-in-law Elliott Teague. He is survived by: his wife Rebecca "Becky" Abernethy; his daughters, Allyson Hancock (Doug) and Stephanie Smith (Jordan); his grandchildren, Wade, Will Hancock, Carys, Dawser Teague and Ladson Smith; and his siblings, Rebecca Abernethy of Lincolnton and David Abernethy. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, September 27th 2026 from 2:00 PM to 2:45 PM at the First Baptist Church (201 Robin Rd, Lincolnton, NC 28092). A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, September 27th 2026 at 3:00 PM at the same location.
