He was predeceased by: his parents, Henry H. Bruhn and Ruth Welch Bruhn; and his sister Mary Ann Douglas (Dugan Douglas). He is survived by: his wife Emileen "Emy" F. Bruhn; his children, Bethany Olson (Larry) and John David Bruhn, Jr.; his stepchildren, Kim Aldridge (Zachary) and Ty Bradford (Akiko); his grandchildren, Lyla Olson, Lucy Olson, Charlie Olson, Ethan Aldridge and Noah Aldridge; his niece Shawn Edgar (David); and his nephew Michael Armstrong (Debbie).
