He is survived by: his parents, John Ellis Rice and Betty Sue Rice; his wife Brenda Levchak Rice; his daughter Melissa Rice Walker; his grandson Jackson Walker; his son-in-law Glenn Walker; his sister Connie; his brother-in-law Mike Ashworth; his nephews, Brandon Ashworth (Lisa Ashworth) and Hunter Ashworth (Brittany Ashworth); his niece Megan Reaves (Dustin Reaves); and his great-nieces and great-nephews, Michael Ashworth, William Ashworth, Elizabeth Reaves, Boone Reaves, Allie Reaves, Dawsyn Ashworth, Kennady Ashworth and Miller Ashworth.

In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorial donations be made to Duke Cancer Institute or Duke Home Care and Hospice.
