He was predeceased by: his parents, John William Barnes and Eunice Brake Barnes; his wife Carol Doak Barnes; his daughter Anne Kristine "Kris" Barnes; and his sister Charlene Miller.

He is survived by: his son Kyle William Barnes (Paula) of Washington, NC; his siblings, Nancy Hughes (Billy) of Callao, VA and David Barnes (Grace) of Richmond, VA.; and his grandchildren, Laken Barnes, Thomas Barnes, Claire Barnes, Brantley Brinn and Collin Brinn.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to First Baptist Church.
