He was predeceased by: his parents, Wayne Schermerhorn and Martha Schermerhorn; and his siblings, Kathy Devine of Washington, Maureen Chin of Washington, Theis Linkous of Maryland and Eugene Schermerhorn of Tennessee.
He is survived by: his siblings, Wayne Schermerhorn (Jill) of Roseburg, Naomi Huey of Walla Walla and Anne Morris of Chico, California; his sons, Vaughn Schermerhorn (Janel) and Patrick Schermerhorn (Kathy Harper); his stepchildren, Paul Riley (Wendy) and Camille Tapp (David); his former wife Tresa Hilliard; his grandchildren, David H. Tapp (Sara), Brent Riley, Gabriel Schermerhorn, Jackson Schermerhorn and Claire Schermerhorn; and his great grandchildren, Ellie Tapp, Charlie Tapp and Beau Tapp. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, September 25th 2026 at 11:00 AM at the Oak Grove Memorial Gardens (3712 Cheek Rd, Durham, NC 27704).
