He was predeceased by: his parents, Sidney Smith and Gertrude Bullard Smith; his daughter Sophie S. Layton; his siblings, Rueben Smith, Wiley Smith, Chester Smith, Lester Smith, Christine Bledsoe, Iula Starr and Linda Johnson; and his grandson Bailey Layton.

He is survived by: his wife Louvenia Smith; his children, Jock Smith (Yvetta) of Durham, NC and Donna Miller (William) of Raleigh, NC; his siblings, Edom Smith, Joe Smith, Jack Smith, Hurley Smith and Lura Phelps; his grandchildren, Jared Smith, Hannah Hunt (Michael), Stephanie Scarano (Jon) and Justin Layton (Sarah); his great grandchildren, Carson Layton, Jack Layton and Brooke Scarano; and his son-in-law Joe Layton.
