He was predeceased by: his father Richard Paul; and his sister Dixie Bowman. He is survived by: his wife Ellen Dentel; his sons, Chris Dentel (Melissa) and Nick Dentel (Lindsay); and his siblings, David Dentel, Susan Craig and Marsha Anderson (Kevin). He is also survived by five grandchildren.
