We announce the death of Richard Dee Cates of Durham, North Carolina, who passed away on October 9, 2026, at the age of 82. Richard will be remembered by family members, friends, and others whose lives were connected in meaningful ways. He was predeceased by: his parents, Allen Duffy and Margaret Thompson Cates; and his brother Larry Cates. He is survived by: his wife Janet Haskell Cates; his brother Norman Cates (Pam); his daughter Krysti Thompson (Ernie); his granddaughters, Miranda Springer (Julian), Chelsey Davie and Bayle Thompson; his great grandchildren, Mikayla Hobgood, Easton Davie, Asher Springer and Skylar Springer; and his close friend Buddy Rasberry (Nancy). He is also survived by several cousins, in-laws, nieces, and nephews.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, October 24th 2026 at 4:30 PM at the New Horizon Church (100 Horizon Pl, Durham, NC 27705).
