She was predeceased by: her father Henry Gilbert; her husband Joseph "Joe" Carter, Jr.; her brother Allen Michael "Buz" Swartz Sr.; and her nephew Allen Michael "Mike" Swartz, Jr. (Carter). She is survived by: her mother Eleanor Byrd Swartz; her children, Joseph "Joe" William Carter, III, Elizabeth "Liz" Carter of Raleigh, NC and Mary Carter Hudson (O. Thomas "Tommy", Jr.) of Cary, NC; her grandchildren, Joseph William Carter, IV (Aliki Triantafyllidis), Catherine Carter Mosser (John, Jr.), Lauren Clare Carter (Brock Boone) and Olivia "Brooke" Hudson (Scott Munn); her niece Amy Klein; her nephew Hank Swartz; her sister-in-law Barbara Swartz; her daughter-in-law Katrina Swartz; and her brother-in-law Tommy Carter. She is also survived by 3 great nieces and 2 great nephews.
