He was predeceased by: his parents, D. S. Ragan and Fannie Ragan; and his siblings, Lloyd, David, Jesse, Orville, Joe, Kathleen, Margaret, Annie and Grace.

He is survived by: his wife Fern Ragan; his daughter Amy (Cary); his grandchildren, Sophie and Ian; and his sister Nancy Sue Price. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in John's name to Leaksville United Methodist Church or to Meals on Wheels America.
