He was loved and cherished by many people including: his significant other Faye Benson (Johnson); his grandchildren, Gene "Squirt" Johnson III (Jessica) of Haw River, NC and Sydney Beth Johnson of Boone, NC; his brothers-in-law, Bobby Johnson (Marie) of Eden, NC and Eugene Johnson (Joann) of Eden; his parents, Milton Ray Benson and Olene Benson (Martin); his children, Mike Benson and Kim Benson; his stepmother Shirley Benson (Gilmore); his brother Mickey Benson; his brother-in-law G. B. Johnson; and also Debra Hunt Johnson of Elon.
