He is survived by: his sons, Kenny Mathis of Elkin and Greg Mathis (Ellie Brown-Mathis) of Greensboro; his siblings, Davis Mathis (Diane) of Elkin, Sara Carter (Stony) of Elkin and Sally Hutchens of Winston-Salem; and his grandchildren, Coleman Mathis, Harrison Brown and Hazel Mathis.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.

When a classmate passes, it is our policy to make a $100 donation to the Elkin Educational Foundation in memory of our classmate. This money goes to support students at our alma mater, Elkin High School. We have many fond memories of John, whom we called “Johnny”, in our school days.”
