He was predeceased by : his parents, Zindel Merrill and Lucille Cauble Merrill; his wife Evelyn "Mamaw" Marlowe Merrill; and his siblings, Bob Merrill and Rose Pearce.

He is survived by : his children, Donna (Jim McHone) of Pilot Mountain, Lisa (Patrick Payne) and Tim (Susan Merrill); his grandchildren, Jill (Sam), Kimberly (Jody), Jonathan (Crystal), Kyle (Carter), Marlowe (Jordan), Emily, Elizabeth and Grace; his great grandchildren, Malee, Joseph, Ava, Avalynn, Daniel, Garrett, River, Emmerson, Jack and Charlotte; and his sister JoAnn Mason of St. Petersburg, FL..

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Trinity of Fairview Church-Wood Ministry.
