We announce the death of Hortez Bateman of Franklin, North Carolina, who passed away on June 19, 2026, at the age of 97. Hortez will be remembered by family members, friends, and others whose lives were connected in meaningful ways. She was predeceased by: her parents, Charles A. Moffitt and Inez Dillard Moffitt; her husband Garland Bateman; her son Harry; and her children-in-law, Howard Moffitt (Zelma), Mildred Richardson (Bill), Wilma Teague (Elmon) and Kate Rowe (Bradford).
She is survived by: her daughters, Deborah B. Smith (Bennie) of Otto, Margaret B. Massie (Tom) of Sylva and Nancy Bateman of Franklin; her granddaughter Tracy S. Dendy (Jason); and her great grandchild Sarah Dendy of Otto. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
