He was predeceased by: his parents, O. C. Thornton and Christine Thomas Thornton; his wife Ruth Thornton; his stepson Jeff Gischel; and his brother Ronald Thornton.

He is survived by: his stepson Greg Gischel (Robin); his sister Lynn (Marshall Davis); and his grandchildren, Sophie Gischel and Gage Gischel.
