He was predeceased by: his daughter Cindy Coates Baker; his grandson Jacob Coates; and his siblings, Jane Hamilton, Jerry and Harvey Coats.

He is survived by: his wife Ellon Coates; his sons, Shane Coates (Sonya) and Daniel Coates (Tracy); his grandson Josh Baker (Heather); his sons, Tristan Moorer (Jordan), Austin, Ryan, Brooke Coates, Jordan Miles (Anthony), Casey Ellis (James), Seth, Hunter and Zach Coates; and his siblings, Clee Coats, Sarah Blissit and Felts. He is also survived by 11 great grandchildren.

Visitation was held on Wednesday, May 21st 2025 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the O'Quinn-Peebles-Phillips Funeral Home & Crematory (1310 S Main St, Lillington, NC 27546). A funeral service was held on Thursday, May 22nd 2025 at 11:00 AM at the Piney Grove Chapel Baptist Church (4440 Piney Grove Rd A, Angier, NC 27501).
