He was predeceased by: his parents, Alfred Eli Scher and Celia Feingold Scher; and his son-in-law John Benjamin Turner. He is survived by: his wife Dorothy "Dottie" Zeigler Scher; his children, Alfred Eli Scher (Andrea) and Rebecca Scher Turner; his brothers, Steward Scher, Lloyd Scher and Carl Scher (Connie); and his grandchildren, Makenley Anne Turner, Grace Elizabeth Turner and Charleigh Kate Turner. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Holy Angels, Gaston Art History Museum or Carolina Raptor Center.
