He was predeceased by: his parent Belton Smith; his wife Vivian Juanita Houser Smith; his mother Nina Moses Smith; his brother Alvin Paris Smith; and his son-in-law David Stewart.
He is survived by: his children, Jeffrey Ray Smith (Cheryl) of Bolivia, N. C., Jacqueline Trigg (Preston) of Tampa, Fla., Gia Womack (Chuck) of Dallas, N. C. and Monica Stewart Agerton (Mike) of Gastonia; his grandchildren, Jared Smith (Carol Spencer) of Belmont, N. C., William (Korina), John "Jack" Trigg of Tampa, Caroline Womack Delgado (Christian) of Raleigh, N. C. and Bailey Stewart Waugh (Christopher) of Belmont; his great grandchild Eden Waugh; and his siblings, Terry Smith of Gastonia and Darlene Clark of Elkin. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Visitation was held on Friday, September 18th 2026 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the Withers and Whisenant Funeral Home (2916 Union Rd, Gastonia, NC 28054). A celebration of life was held on Friday, September 18th 2026 at 12:00 PM at the same location.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to Hospice and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
