He was predeceased by: his siblings, Ray Smith, John Wayne "Bud" Smith and Sandra Smith; his nephew Jesse Smith; his niece Angie Sherman Reiman; and his brothers-in-law, Charlie Massengill and Frank Sauls.
He is survived by: his wife Ann Stroud Smith; his brother Roger Smith (Kay); his siblings-in-law, Pat Smith, Frances Stroud Massengill and Hank Stroud (Darlene); his nephews, Sam Smith (Ashley), Frank Sauls (Kristi), Terry Stroud and Jerry Stroud (Sheri); and his great-nieces and great-nephews, Chris, Lauren, Kristen, Hannah, MacKenzie, Harper, Reed, Maci, John, Ryan, Derek, Alec and Stevie Ann.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be given in his memory to Kitty Askins Hospice Center, 107 Handley Park Court, Goldsboro, NC 27534.
