He was predeceased by: his parents, Jack Alvin Gates and Ethel Douglas Gates; and his siblings, Alice Durham, Wallace Gates, Roland Gates, Nathaniel Gates and Thomas Gates.

He is survived by: his wife Gloria Barton Gates; his son Michael A. Gates (Tammy Grubb); his granddaughter Gabrielle Strum; and his siblings, Shirley Gentry, Darlene Watson, Irene Starling and Julius Gates.

Visitation was held on Saturday, October 17th 2026 from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at the Rich & Thompson Chapel - Graham (207 E Elm St, Graham, NC 27253). A funeral service was held on Saturday, October 17th 2026 at 3:00 PM at the same location.
