He was predeceased by: his parents, James Shaw and Carrie Shaw; his wife Janie Ruth Shaw; his children, Walter Sanders and Cora Sanders-Jones; and his siblings, Louise Eyler, Pearl Hubbard, Harvey and Bill Wooten.

He is survived by: his children, Michael R. Shaw (Jennifer), Shella Sanders (Ron), Deborah Broadnax, Pamela Fennell (William) and Jamie Stout-Campbell (Hollis); and his sisters, Shirley Shepard and Dorothy Wooten. He is also survived by grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family, and stray cats.
