He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

“I have so many great memories of John as a neighbor, in Huntsville, Al. I would babysit Tamara and Kristie for John and Brenda, on occasion. When John and Brenda returned home, John would ask the girls how many cookies Anne ate or was I mean to them. At Christmas in 1971, I was recently married, and my husband was sent to Viet Nam. John gave me a bag of toy soldiers for Christmas, so I wouldn't miss my soldier. He has always had quite a sense of humor. He will surely be missed. Anne Hammett”
