He was predeceased by: his parents, Samuel Vernon Petteway, Sr. and Blanche M. Buffaloe Petteway; and his daughter Melissa Carol Petteway. He is survived by: his significant other Melisa Hanks; his daughters, Amy Caroline Wood (David) and Dawn Christine Kestner (Daniel); his stepchildren, Maggie Hanks (Wil) and Drew Hanks (Shana); his grandchildren, Victoria Walters, Ashley Walters (Michael), Amber Walters (Kendra), James Shepley, Colin Smith (Reba), Jarron Coughi (Alaysha), Murry Hanks, Rozy Strickland and Braxton Strickland; his great grandchildren, Isaiah Valentin, Jeremiah Valentin, Elijah Valentin, Caroline Walters, Landon Walters, Lily Johnson, Sariyah Coughi and Roxy Shepley; and his brothers, Donald A. Petteway (Chris) and C. Doug Petteway (Dana).
