He was predeceased by: his parents, Walter Stephen Sr. and Mamie Jane Whitehead Cole; his wife Audrey Woody Cole; and his brother Lester Bitsy Cole. He is survived by: his sons, Lanny Cole (Susan) of Cornelius and Larry Cole (Patsy) of Etowah; his granddaughters, Katherine Long (Paul) of Huntersville and Elizabeth Grant (Ian) of Hendersonville; his great grandchildren, Chandler, Mattie Long, William Wesley Grant and Emma Grant; and his sister-in-law Joann Woody. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
