He was predeceased by : his father David Grant; his son Scott Whitaker; and his siblings, Jack, Bill, James, Ernest, Everett Shelton and Pearly Shelton.

He is survived by : his wife Joyce Shelton; his children, David Shelton (Sonia), Jason Whitaker (Heather) and Teresa Walker (Ken); his grandchildren, Chandler Nash, Reed Jones, Devin Whitaker, Dalton Whitaker, Taylor Allen and Charity Floyd; and his niece Amanda Scroggs Gitchell. He is also survived by Several other grandchildren and several great grandchildren.
